One theme in The Catcher in the Rye is guilt and innocence. An example of this in the novel is when Holden is against Sally. At first Holden calls Sally a pain in the butt. then he tries to apologize but she doesn't accept. He continues on apologizing, but she just mocks him (Salinger 134). Holden then says to himself, "She was still sort of crying and all of a sudden I did feel sort of sorry I'd said it." (Salinger 134). Holden then realizes sometimes certain things he says just leaves guilt on his conscience. "He criticizes and philophizes about people who are boring, people who are insecure, and above all, people who are phony." (Natchez). I personally believe Holden doesn't need to open his mouth to people he dislikes because it always will hurt someone, whether it is someone else or himself.

Another example of guilt and innocence in the novel is when Holden is against his mother. To start with Holden plans on going home in a few days so he starts packing, then he discovers a pair of brand-new ice skates his mother bought for him (Salinger 51). Once Holden's eyes lay upon the skates he thinks to himself, "I could see my mother going in Spaulding's and asking the salesman a million dopy questions- and here I was getting the ax again. It made me feel pretty sad." (Salinger 52). Holden then notices that his mother went through a lot of trouble for him and he just goes and gets kicked out of school again. "He wants to hold on to what he sees as his innocence, which is really his blindness." (Natchez). I believe Holden wants to stay a kid so he doesn't try in school, thinking it will perserve his youth, even if it really only leaves guilt.

A second theme is anger. An example of this theme is when Maurice angers Holden. It begins when Maurice knocks on the door and Holden opens it for him./ Maurice then asks Holden for money and Holden tells him that he didn't owe him. He pushes Holden and continues to ask for money, but Holden won't give in (Salinger 100-101). Maurice then takes off his shirt and warns Holden. Holden just tries and scare him with threats and Sunny grabs Holden's wallet./ She then takes his money and Holden starts crying. At that point Maurice starts to mess with Holden (Salinger 102-103). As Maurice messes with him Holden thinks to himself, "I was still sort of crying. I was so damn mad and nervous and all." (Salinger 103). Holden hates people such as Maurice because of their problems. "Holden is wounded by his disappointment in the faults of the world and frustrated because he finally realizes that he can't fix them." (Telgen 123). I believe Holden needs to finally come to the understanding that the world will never be a perfect place.

Another example of anger in the novel is when Stradlater angers Holden. It starts when Holden questions Stradlater about a girl and Stradlater won't tell. Then Holden continues to ask about it./ Stradlater finally answers Holden's question and play socks him. After that Holden hits Stradlater and then Stradlater holds Holden down (Salinger 42-43). Holden then begins to yell at Stardlater and he warns Holden, but Holden keeps on. Stradlater warns him again, but Holden still continues./ Stradlater then punches Holden and makes his nose bleed, Holden just lays on the floor cussing at Stradlater (Salinger 44-45). At that moment Holden says to himself, " I was so mad, I was practically bawling." (Salinger 45). Personally I think Holden needs to learn how to not get so angry at some things and maybe he would be better off.

The third and final theme in The Catcher in the Rye is alienation and loneliness. An example of this in the novel is when Holden is riding through New York in a cab. It starts when Holden gets into the cab and begins riding. He peers out the window and sees a man and girl walking, then he hears them laugh (Salinger 81). Once he hears their laughter he thinks to himself, "New York's terrible when somebody laughs on the street very late at night. You can hear it for miles. It makes you feel so lonesome and depressed." (Salinger 81). Telgen from Novels for Students says, "Holden Caulfield is a deeply troubled sixteen-year-old boy who is alienated from his environment and from society as a whole." (120). I think if Holden wouln't be so choosy with friends he wouldn't be as lonely as he is.

Another example of alienation and loneliness in the novel is when Holden is in the hat-check room. It starts when Holden is sitting on a radiator and begins talking to a piano player. The paino player is one of the kind of people who Holden hates, so after Holden talks to him he head for the hat-check room (Salinger 152-153). When Holden does this he thinks to himself, "When I finally got down off the radiator and went out to the hat-check room, I was crying and all. I don't know why, but I was. I guess it was because I was feeling so damn depressed and lonesome." (Salinger 153). Holden searches everywhere but he still is always lonesome. "He seeks to find some consolation, some help during this difficult time but finds no one." (Rollyson 2819). I only wish Holden could find happiness in this cruel world, to at least feel some feeling of being alive.
